My obsession at the moment is Alice in Wonderland.

I am currently working on a series of works based around the book, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Alice in Wonderland has been an exploration of ideas and imagery for over 144 years, since Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll first put pen to paper. These words and imagery lift themselves from the pages and creates a world that any artist could explore infinitely and keep drawing from this often incomprehensible novel.

Many artists have been fascinated and inspired to this story, namely Charles Blackman and Tim Burton; and illustrators such as Ralph Steadman and Mervyn Peake. One story; thousands of interpretations.

This is one more interpretation.

I have been working on a series of photo-media portraits, profiling the characters of the book. These portraits truly marry the world of digital photograph with new media technology. My love of portraiture, fashion and the ridiculous all come together in these works. Grace Coddington, Miles Aldridge and David LaChapelle inspire me. Characters so far explored are Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Queen, the Doormouse, the King and the White Rabbit. The models chosen are all interesting people in their own right, from DJs to Dancers who themselves live a colourful life in Sydney. Choosing the right model is an important part of the process of this project. I wanted to do something more complex and strange. I didn't want to make the characters to obvious; I wanted to show that they were all a little troubled by something secret. I would like to achieve a rhythm with the images. A strong sense of portraiture, but where the characters have a sense of charm along with a strangeness.

For me, reinterpreting the book in my own visual language allows me freedom to explore and even embellish the story.

Alice in Wonderland is license to have fun, discover and reacquaint myself with childhood curiosity.
