May 7 - 17, Newtown went to the Beach

Lennox Street Studios' Group Show At Bondi Pavilion has now closed. We are now planning our next open day at Lennox Street so watch this page for details or subscribe to our newsletter.

‘Newtown at the Beach’ was a collaborative exhibition of works from 17 artists from the Lennox Street Studios in Newtown. They were using the beach as inspiration and as a new context for exhibiting their art about water and the human form. Each artist interpreted the theme of water and the human form in their own unique and individual way using a variety of media ranging from ink, watercolour and oils, to mosaic, sculpture, hand printed images on fabric and installations.

February 19 - March 1 2009

Jennie Pry's solo exhibition 'Bathing Belles' at the Bondi Pavilion was a huge success, with many visitors coming to tell Jennie their stories and bringing their bathing suits of old in to the Bondi Pavilion to show her. There was media interest too. The Sydney Morning Herald wrote:

Sometimes a private collection has a cultural worth far beyond its monetary value. When Sydney artist Jennie Pry resumed her career after her children started school, her drawing teacher asked if there were any objects she found inspiring. She immediately thought of the swimsuits she had been collecting over the years.

It took off from there and soon fellow artists donated costumes and the stories that went with them. She has found women really want to talk about what they were doing when they wore the bathing suits. Like wedding dresses, they tend to be kept as a reminder of a special period in their lives.

Lookout for Jennie's bathing belles at the Maritime Museum later this year and meanwhile see more of what SMH had to say about her work here.
