This recent body of work continues to explore the theme of landscape to reference the “ever changing state of the emotions and that of the human spirit”.
The paintings are an extension of my former ‘Horizon’ series. These images of lakes and mountains still reveal my interest in atmosphere – in light and mood – but the land has solidified and emerged from the horizons.
The paintings are constructed by multiple layers of oil paint applied to board, building up subtle tonal levels. In some areas I have applied the paint vigorously with a palette knife and then scraped back to reveal an almost literal recreation of the rocky crevices and flinty surfaces of the mountain form.
Although the work is based on real landscapes, my primary concern is not to make accurate representations of the land but rather to explore our emotional response to place, and question the nature of memory. In the tradition of Romantic art, I am interested in the natural world as a mirror of an internal world and aim to create landscapes that are at once familiar and unknown.
These works with their quiet mood, and misty atmosphere play between experience and imagination and are poetic reconstructed landscapes which suggest personal narratives.
